Super Moon Lunar Eclipse - September 27, 2015

Super Moon Lunar Eclipse
September 27-28, 2015
Southold, NY

On September 27 there was a Lunar Eclipse with the Moon at Perigee. The Moon was 14% larger  then we normally observe it because it is at its closest approach to the Earth in its orbit.

Partial Solar Eclipse

Partial Solar Eclipse as seen from Fire Island, New York

On the morning of Sunday, November 3, 2013, the eastern United States was privileged to be in the path of a partial Solar Eclipse at Sunrise. Many had the misfortune of having clouds obscure their viewing of the eclipse, as did I, but there was enough of a break in the clouds for me to capture some awesome images of this rare event from Fire Island, New York!

Not quite sure how this image happened but I like it! :-)

Moon, Venus and Saturn - September 8, 2013

 Finding Planets in the Daytime

Recently did some daytime planet hunting to find Venus in the daytime close to the Crescent Moon and was able to snap a few photos.

After the sun set I was able to locate Saturn and Spica as well.

Aurora Photos - September 26, 2011

Aurora Borealis - Acadia National Park, Maine

An alert was sent out from Spaceweather Aurora Detection Network on September 26, 2011. Supposedly the Kp Index hit 8 and we were in the middle of a geomagnetic storm

"GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A strong-to-severe geomagnetic storm is in progress following the impact of a coronal mass ejection (CME) at approximately 12:15 UT (Universal Time) on September 26th. The Goddard Space Weather Lab reports a "strong compression of Earth's magnetosphere. Simulations indicate that solar wind plasma [has penetrated] close to geosynchronous orbit starting at 13:00 UT." Geosynchronous satellites could therefore be directly exposed to solar wind plasma and magnetic fields. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for Northern and Southern Lights after nightfall."

The Aurora was visible from the Acadia National Park, Schoodic Point, Maine, shortly before 9:00pm EST. Stargazing events were going on at the same time, the Acadia Night Sky Festival and The Sky Rangers Interpretive Workshop, from a dark-sky park. It was great being in the right place at the right time with my camera to capture the event. My first Aurora!

Another photographer, Robert Sparks, from NOAO (The National Optics Astronomy Observatory), one of our instructors and telescope coaches, was also there and his photos can be found on Flickr. He used a Fish-eye lens which caught a wider field of view.

Night Sky Photos During Power Outage from Hurricane Irene

Some photos taken during the power outage from Hurricane Irene. It was a rare opportunity to view the night sky without the glow of light pollution from the lights on Long Island. It was also a good time to take some photos of the night sky. These photos were taken where I live where the night sky is usually drowned out by too much and improper lighting.
